Types of Square Glass Tiles
Water Glass Mosaic Tiles
Water glass is a high-temperature fused glass made from materials including fluorspar, colorants and soda ash. The materials are fired at approximately 1300°C and pressed into molds. Selected pink colors may require gold-based colorants to achieve their distinctive tone.
An iridescent coating can be added to create a rainbow-like surface. Transparent tiles may also be backed with gold or platinum foil, producing greater sparkle and a refined metallic appearance.
The color and glass body remain visible from both sides, making water glass especially suitable for hand-cut mosaic murals and detailed pixel art.
Vitreous Glass Mosaic Tiles
Vitreous glass is also formed through high-temperature firing and mold pressing. These tiles normally have grooved backs for stronger bonding and gently sloped edges of approximately 45 degrees.
Available finishes include matte, sand-speckled, iridescent and gold-sand effects. Properly specified vitreous glass mosaic tiles are an excellent choice for pools, bathrooms, outdoor areas and exterior walls.
Recycled Glass Tiles
Recycled glass tiles are made by pressing recycled glass powder into square molds, firing it at a lower temperature and applying color to the surface. Their softly rounded corners and slightly organic edges create a relaxed, handcrafted appearance.
These small square glass tiles work especially well in contemporary bathrooms, backsplashes and decorative feature walls.
Crystal Glass Tiles
Crystal glass tiles begin as flat glass. Color is applied to the back before the glass is cut into different sizes and fired at a lower temperature to soften and smooth the edges.
The back-painted construction produces clear color, visual depth and a polished appearance, making crystal glass a strong option for kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls and indoor decorative surfaces.
Available Square Glass Tile Sizes

Where Can Square Glass Tiles Be Used?
Bathrooms and Showers
Square glass bathroom tiles reflect light and help compact bathrooms feel brighter. Use them on shower walls, vanity backsplashes, niches and decorative feature walls.
Kitchen Backsplashes
Square glass backsplash tiles are easy to clean and add color, shine and depth behind sinks, countertops and cooking areas.
Swimming Pools
Approved square glass pool tiles can be used for pool interiors, waterlines, steps and spa walls. Iridescent surfaces interact beautifully with sunlight and moving water.
Outdoor and Exterior Walls
Suitable vitreous and water glass products can be specified for outdoor feature walls, building façades and hospitality projects. Always confirm the individual product’s exterior, freeze-thaw and submerged-use rating before ordering.
Square Glass Mosaic Patterns
Mixed-Size Geometric Patterns
Squares in different sizes can be combined to create pinwheel-style layouts. A large central square is surrounded by smaller square pieces, adding rhythm and movement while preserving a clean geometric structure.
Pixel Mosaic Art
Different colored squares can be treated as individual pixels and arranged to form images, logos, gradients and graphic patterns.
Pixel murals commonly use 10 × 10 mm, 15 × 15 mm or 20 × 20 mm pieces. The smaller the tile, the more pixels can fit within the design, allowing finer details and smoother color transitions.
Water glass and vitreous glass are the most commonly used materials for pixel mosaics.
Handmade Mosaic Murals
For artistic murals, our craftsmen follow the direction, texture and colors of the original design. Individual glass pieces are selected, trimmed and arranged by hand.
The tiles become the artist’s brushstrokes, gradually building the complete image. This detailed process requires time and skilled manual work, but it produces depth and character that machine-arranged patterns cannot reproduce. Water glass is especially suitable for these custom murals.
How to Choose the Right Square Glass Tile
Choose the glass type according to the installation area:
-
Select approved vitreous or water glass for pools and exterior projects.
-
Choose crystal or recycled glass for backsplashes and decorative walls.
-
Use smaller chips for detailed patterns, curves and pixel artwork.
-
Choose iridescent square glass tiles for shifting colors and stronger light reflection.
-
Check the product specifications before using glass mosaics on floors, submerged surfaces or freeze-thaw exteriors.
-
Order a sample to review the actual color, texture and reflection under your project lighting.
Installation and Care
Use a glass-tile-compatible white thin-set mortar, especially behind transparent or translucent glass. The substrate should be flat, clean and properly waterproofed where required.
Select a glass-safe grout and follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions for coverage, curing and movement joints. Pools, exterior façades and other submerged or exposed installations should be completed by an experienced professional.
Clean the surface with warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh cleaners that could scratch or dull specialty finishes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Difference Between Square Mosaic Glass Tiles and Square Glass Mosaic Tiles?
These phrases normally describe the same product: small square pieces of glass arranged individually or mounted together on sheets.
Can Every Square Glass Tile Be Installed in a Swimming Pool?
No. Only products specifically approved for permanent submersion should be used in pools. Check the individual product specifications before installation.
Can Square Glass Tiles Be Used on Floors?
Some glass mosaics are suitable for floors, while others are designed only for walls. Floor suitability depends on the surface finish, chip size, grout joints and required slip resistance.
Why Do Iridescent Tiles Change Color?
The iridescent surface reflects different wavelengths of light. Its appearance changes with the viewing angle, surrounding colors, natural light and water movement.
